MATH35012, Wave Motion
pre-Exam office hours
If you are taking "Wave Motion", then I will be available to answer any questions regarding the course notes, example sheets or past papers during:
Monday May 11th 11-12, 1-3pm.
Tuesday May 12th 11-12, 1-3pm.
Of course you can drop by at any other time or email me to arrange a time, but I'll try to hold these times open during the week of the exam.
Revision before you begin
As with most level 3/4 applied courses, this material makes heavy use of
vector calculus, linear PDEs and methods for ODEs. Before starting this
course you might wish to review:
Some very basic things that should be trivial at this level.
You do not need to have done any 'fluid mechanics' courses before.
Example sheet 1, week 2
Example sheet 2, week 3
Example sheet 3, weeks 4 AND 5
Example sheet 4, week 6
Example sheet 5, week 7
Revision quiz, week 8
Some sample exam questions, week 9
Example sheet 6, week 10
Example sheet 7, week 11
The questions linked below are entirely optional (and a little harder).
Coursework is due by Wednesday April 22nd (week 10). It is worth 20 percent of the final mark.
Results of the coursework test are available as a text file above. The marks are out of 20, and ordered by student ID number. I will give some general feedback about the coursework in the examples class.
Solutions to example sheets will be posted here as the course progresses.

Lecture material will be made available here as the course progresses.
Chapter 1, Wave Kinematics.
Chapter 2, Waves on Elastic Strings
Chapter 3, Water Waves
Chapter 4, Sound Waves
Other support material/animations:
Handout: 1D wave equation and Fourier series.
Group velocity: Rayleigh's explanation
Group velocity: Wave packets
Getting help with this course
You can ask about any of this material during the weekly problems class. If you cannot resolve your problem in this way, feel free to discuss it with me at the end of a lecture, email me for an appointment, or come along to my office hour during the semester.
